School of Seven Bells is made up of Benjamin Curtis and identical twins Alejandra and Claudia Deheza. The Deheza sisters were formerly in the group on!air!library! with Phillip Wann and did a split EP with The Album Leaf before releasing their own full lenth. Among the many strange influences on this group's sound, Alejandra is a frequent lucid dreamer and says this contributes greatly to the lyrics. The lyrics are actually written first and then acompanied with music afterwards, which explains why this group's lyrics are never the jumbled, meaningless filler we're going so used to in catchy pop songs. They have two albums, Alpinisms from 2005 and Disconnect from Desire which just came out this year. Which brings me to "Half Asleep". I chose this particular video because, unlike the Alpinisms album version, you can hear everything they are saying. And let me tell you guys right now, the lyrics in this song are worth giving a good listen.
School of Seven Bells is on Ghostly International, Vagrant Records (which brings you Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Dashboard Confessional, The Hold Steady, HORSE the Band, Murder By Death, Placebo, and their alumni list reads like a journal entry of all the other bands you used to listen to in high school. Thank you, Vagrant.
